Haylie's Week 9 Post
After watching Chris Milk's TedTalk "How virtual reality can create the ultimate empathy machine", I see virtual reality differently. I don't know too much about VR and my initial impression was that mostly, people use it for video games or just for a fun experience. But, now I feel like there are deeper purposes to VR. Chris Milk mentions how you fully get put into the other person's shoes. I believe that this is one of the most powerful mediums because of the fact that you you get placed into a whole different world. It gives the audience the opportunity to fully immerse themselves and see the world from a completely different perspective, which feeds into the "empathy machine" nickname.
I looked at Clouds Over Sidra more and I thought this piece was very interesting. There were transitions in between "scenes" of people interacting. While I was watching this video, I felt like I was present and not just pretending to observe people through a screen. I think it's important to have the 360 degree view in this because I feel like just a video would not give the same effect. I don't think the empathy feeling as the audience would be as strong.
I also have a new found appreciation for VR - at first I thought it was a silly thing that gamers like, but Chris Milk's explanation of using this tool for the better really stuck with me. I also do not think a plain video would give the same effect - the 360 is super powerful.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't really think about VR beyond the purposes of entertainment before this. It's definitely given me something to chew on, even if I'm not sure I completely agree with the general execution.
