Mobile & Touch & Immersive Spaces (Kira Littlefield)

Scott Rettberg author of Electronic Literautre states, "Other than the internet the most significant change in our relationship to computational technology in recent years is the increasing ubiquity of mobile devices and locative technologies" (Rettberg, 183). Personally, I found this statement to be very intriguing. I never thought about the fact that usually we are never truly lost because we have access to mobile devices which have technologies to help us find our way, like maps. It seems these locative technologies have changed quite a bit in the world. Rettberg states, "This has both positive and negative affects" (Rettberg, 184). With that I would have to agree, personally all of the internet has good and bad effects. Rettberg states, "In spite of the short life span of many individual works of electronic literature, genres of electronic literature don't die, nor do they fade away. It is more appropriate to consider how genres of electronic literature are absorbed into new genres and forms, how they serve as building blocks for other forms that follow them" (Rettberg, 201). I find this statement to be very powerful, as Rettberg is correct, a lot of what has come today, came from past forms. This may be true for many things. Electronic Literature by Rettberg has probably opened many doors to more ideas for the future of electronic literature. Personally looking at Bubble was very interesting, unfortunately I couldn't get as good a look at Far Away from Far Away because I was unable to access the actual piece, only read about it. However, I feel that being able to interact with a piece with touchscreen definitely enhances it, and makes it feel more immersive because you are apart of the story.

I decided to look more into Bubble. Before even reading anything on this piece, the experience its self was very eye opening. Throughout this interactive piece you are fighting to keep your bubble alive, which to me the bubble symbolized the Earth, and how we are trying to keep it alive due to climate change. Personally, the last part of the piece is what really stuck out to me, because you are trying to clean your bubble but more debris keeps getting on it until it is overwhelming it, and there is no way to fix it at that point. It seems this is symbolism for what could happen to Earth. Below is a photo of the message you get at the end of Bubble and it tells you a little bit more about it.

  1. The last part of Bubble stuck out to me too. It's kind of scary to watch the whole project and then read about how our Earth could be in as much danger as the one in the project.
