Lily Week 4
For this week I really dove into My Body a Wunderkammer by Shelley Jackson. I found this piece to be really engaging, clicking through the different parts of the body was a really interesting way to view someone's life story and how our bodies represent who we are, to an extent. I started off my clicking on the hands, which turned out to be my favorite section I explored. The hands focused on a more childlike perspective of self-sense, starting with an opening scene of a playground. Each section explored a different part of the hand, further breaking down this idea of holding a magnifying glass to the human body. Going from the skin, to the bones, to the hand’s abilities to draw and create. The whole thing felt a lot like self reflection, like someone looking back on their life and trying to make sense of past memories. I then looked at tattoos, which was a very different writing style. While certainly a shorter section, it was also far more factual than creative. It felt very sharply written, getting straight to the point as if it was almost annoying, which adds up with the words that were being written. I explored a few more sections but most of them followed similar writing styles. Overall I never really got bored of this website, I felt engaged the whole time and found it really easy to follow.
I really love your analysis! I also chose to look at this piece and I found it just as fascinating! Shelley Jackson's work is wonderful and i think it is something that everyone should check out at some point if they are exploring hypertext literature!
ReplyDeleteI also loved the hand section of My Body! It was almost nostalgic at times, and did put you back into a childlike mind set at something fun and symbolic like a playground. The drawings were cool, considering they were her work, but I don't know if I completely enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the hands part of My Body was interesting too, but my god, internal organs was too! The writing in this piece alongside the art is poetic. An absolutely beautiful piece overall, and I love how you explain it. Our bodies show our stories (maybe not fully, but a good part of it). It's how we interact with the world and others. Our own customizable sacks of flesh haha!
ReplyDeleteLily, I love your take on My Body. I also specifically enjoyed the detail present in the hand section, I found it to be descriptively interesting and filled with vivid detail. I also think that the element of reflection present in the piece allows for a deeper emotional connection with the reader.
