Hypertext (Kira Littlefield)

A Manifesto for Cyborgs by Donna Haraway was definitely interesting, but sometimes I found myself a little confused. However, I will be focusing on afternoon and Entre Ville by J.R. Carpenter. Reading afternoon in class was confusing at times, due to how it seemed to jump from one story line to another. I feel that was common for most of us reading it. It was also interesting how it seemed there was no real ending. However, if I kept exploring it who knows if I would of found something similar to an ending. Overall, I found afternoon to be very intriguing and I wouldn't mind looking into it some more. Entre Ville by J.R. Carpenter was also a very intriguing piece. When I first explored it, I found it to be a little confusing, but after I did a little bit of extra reading about it, it made more sense to me. J.R Carpenter said this, "Entre Ville is a web-based heat-wave poem presented in the vernacular of my neighborhood, where cooking smells, noisy neighbors and laundry lines crisscross the alleyway one sentence at a time" (Carpenter). Based on Carpenters statement, you can see what Entre Ville is supposed to represent. It is supposed to represent Carpenters neighborhood in Montréal. Entre Ville was made based off a commission J.R Carpenter got. It was for the fiftieth anniversary of the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. Personally, my favorite aspect of Entre Ville were all the detailed video's included in it. These video's really helped display different parts of Carpenters neighborhood. I wonder how J.R Carpenter picked out the theme of this piece, as it seems a little chaotic, but also put together at the same time. As this piece was made in 2006, I would be interested to see how it would look if it was made now in 2025.

  1. "a little chaotic, but also put together at the same time" is a great aspiration for a hypertext! haha

  2. I also really enjoyed the videos that J.R. Carpenter included in "Entre Ville". Those visual and audio aspects brought her writing to life.

  3. I agree that if i had really taken the time to dive into a Afternoon that i could've figure it out better, but it certainly was confusing at times.
