I was intrigued by Donna Haraway's "A Manifesto for Cyborgs: Science, Technology, and Socialist Feminism in the 1980s". Within her Essay she discusses a cyborg, "a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction" (Haraway). This organism acts as a metaphor for feminism, and how it shouldn't be concrete, but rather a fluid concept. She states that "There is nothing about being "female" that naturally binds women" (Haraway). Its interesting to learn about her take on technology, and knowing how far we've come its even more interesting to experience a utilization of the media to represent all different types of identities, from gender, race, and sexuality.
I dove deeper into "My Body- a Wunderkammer & (Shelley Jackson)". This website was super intriguing, and I loved the interactiveness that came with it. I noticed a theme of body positivity in some parts of her body that I explored, and I loved her appreciation for her body; I think society these days has progressed in appreciating and supporting all body types but this still felt refreshing to read at times! I will say, this website made me very uncomfortable as well. While this was amazing to read such vulnerable things, I could have blatantly done without the details of certain parts of the body. I don't know if this was a me problem, and that I need to maybe grow up, however it was agonizing to read certain parts if you know what I mean!
I'm guessing you read the tail section? It does feel like reading a diary, and the vulnerability contrasts with the public forum of the WWW.
ReplyDeleteI didn't look into this one as much as I did the others, but I agree with you! I do think that we have gone backwards with body positivity within the last few years though, given the resurgence of low-rise jeans and early 2000s fashion. Perhaps it's time to bring back these levels of vulnerability to combat that?
ReplyDeleteI agree that My Body- a Wunderkammer was interesting but also was uncomfortable at times. If I started to read a section and it was getting a little too graphic I just skipped to another but overall it was quite interesting!
