Elayna's Week 2 Post
In Chapter 2 "Combinatory Poetics", it discusses "the oldest genre of electronic literature" (Electronic Literature, Rettberg). I personally enjoyed this chapter, because poems happen to be my favorite genre in all types of literature. I love the idea that digital literature can display something that appears random, or unconnectable, but it somehow makes sense in whatever way you interpret it, on a deep level. Combinatory poetics, or digital poems allows a world beyond, a fixed book. It can forever be changed, manipulated, in an endless amount of ways; thats what makes this genre so amazing to me! The section about "Dadaists", was extremely interesting with their insane hypocricy, and love hate relationship to art. Although they "despise" art, their poems are intriguing with their combination of random words, that don't necessarily makes sense, it triggers imagination, and creativity of the reader!
I decided to look into "Storyland" by Nanette Wylde, and bring it to the table! When you get to the page it describes this experience as "a randomly created narrative which plays with social stereotypes and elements of popular culture" (Storyland, Wylde). With its hands-off, interactive features, it allows everyone to have a different generated poem! You press Begin, and it brings you to a black screen with clown music, that adds to the whimsicalness of the digital literature. It will then type sentences that create your poem! I tried a few times, and got complete different themes, or ideas! This is a wicked cool piece of digital literature!
I really like the simple, colorful, clown-looking vibe of "Storyland" that you examined. I didn't get a chance to look at that one, but I definitely will now. The poetry that's on the picture also seems more like a story, which is so different from the Love Letters that I looked at for my post.
ReplyDeleteI love that you see this random but connected idea. I think because of its "original" or "historical" attributes, stemming from the DADA, it's more understandable/acceptable in poetry. Hopefully this will trigger some DADA-esque creativity this week! & Storyland is "wicked cool"! :)
